Selections: Kelly Moran

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Having spent the start of her career working with a meticulously planned, mathematical approach to composition, in 2017, after the release of her album Bloodroot, Kelly Moran started down a different route. Swapping plan for instinct and embracing unabashed experimentation, it led her to her 2018 album Ultraviolet, and with it, to Warp Records.

The decision to change tack came after a bout of writer’s block, though the result appears to have unlocked deeper reserves of creativity. Her follow-up EP, Origin, released this year, exposed still more of Moran’s newfound penchant for trial and error, and shows like her upcoming set at Sonár in Barcelona have embraced audiovisual elements as well.

Ahead of her show at Sonár, Moran has selected list of songs that have resonated with her since her touring schedule expanded to encompass festivals of this ilk. In putting it together she told us: “I thought about how in the past year I’ve been exposed to so much new music because I’ve been touring and playing festivals. This playlist is a selection of some of the artists I’ve gotten to share bills with, as well as musicians I’ve become friendly with through playing these shows.”

With tracks by Shed, Angel Ho, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Gaika, we’re more than a little envious of the route her journey of discovery has taken.
