Selections: Marika Hackman

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know

The British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist first appeared in 2013 with That Iron Taste, released via Dirty Hit. Imbuing her tracks with dark, melancholic lyrics, singles such as Bath Is Black retained a buoyancy to her folk-indebted sound. In the same year, she released the four-track EP Sugar Blind, which included her stunning cover of Joanna Newsom’s 81. In line with her first full-length, Hackman’s sophomore album We Slept At Last displayed more of her dark, profound lyricism, but carried her sound forward with an unsettling quality and references to folklore.

This year, she released I’m Not Your Man, a record which sees her abandon her more esoteric roots to deliver an honest and darkly funny body of work, with the artist singing about stealing a man’s girlfriend and the perception of lesbian relationships. To give us some insight into the tracks she’s currently got on rotation, Hackman has curated an exclusive playlist for Crack, filled with rock and pop cuts from the likes of Little Dragon, Alvvays, Bon Iver and more. Listen to her hand-picked selections below.
