Selections: Nene H

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated playlists from those in the know.

Berlin-based producer Nene H is classically trained in piano, but it’s when she discovered electronic music that she found her distinct sound. Now, she blends harsh noise, drones and Arabic melodies with contemporary club structures – as on her recent collaborative EP with Kaltès, entitled Protest. The words ‘resist’ and ‘persist’ feature on the release’s cover, phrases which find expression in brooding techno snagged by screeches and industrial carnage.

Her Selections playlist for Crack exemplifies her irreverent view towards the norm as well as a lust for defiant music. The frightening screams of Aja on the Perc track Spit, and the sarcastic jibes of Marie Davidson outline the producer’s uncompromising attitude, while Steve Reich and Olivier Messiaen pieces give nods to her classical roots.
