Selections: Rina Sawayama

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

2017 was good for Rina Sawayama. It saw the Tokyo-born British pop star release her mini album RINA. Comprised of eight super-slick, glossy pop tracks that hark back to the late 90s and early 00s, the release propelled the singer-songwriter into the media’s focus with her meditations on navigating social anxiety in the digital era.

With the spotlight concentrated on the rising artist, we asked her to share a list of tracks that’ve informed her mini LP and shaped her formative years. Suitably, there’s Automatic by Utada Hikaru – Sawayama has previously said that the track was once an obsession of hers – Britney Spears, Evanescence, Aaliyah and Avril Lavigne.

A set of nostalgic pop tunes for those who grew up in the 00s, relive your younger years via the play button below.
