Selections: Swan Meat

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Swan Meat is the recording alias of the poet, producer and DJ Reba Fay. The artist’s musical output is informed by experiences of bodily alienation through chronic illness, resulting in a disorientating, carnivalesque mix of spoken word and jarring industrial and ambient compositions.

Previous releases have included debut EP Bounty, and Knife Splits Ice, a collaborative EP with Japanese producer Yoshitaka Hikawa. Most recently, Fay’s collages of sonic fragments have found form on third EP Tame, which explores the concept of survival whilst paying homage to early PS1 adventure games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

She incorporates choice tracks from this EP, alongside songs from artists like doom-rock trio Boris and hardcore outfit Black Dice, into her Selections playlist: a dark, hard-hitting homage to 2018 vengeance thriller Mandy.

As Fay explains;’Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy was without a doubt my favourite film of 2018. I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m not one to give spoilers, so all I’ll say is its a hellishly bloody and brutal Nicolas Cage-fronted revenge tale. What’s great about Mandy though is how visually stunning it is: everything’s cloaked in a deep dreamy psychedelic haze. Think – one of those glowing neon mushroom ceiling posters but in, like, a teenage Cenobite’s netherworld bedroom.

For my playlist I decided to curate the imaginary soundtrack to what might be a “spiritual successor” to this movie, maintaining the prog metal feel of the original but opening up space for hard jams & personal favourites: Infected Mushroom, the new Clouds’ release, as well as selections from my own just-released EP, TAME.’
