Selections: The Internet

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Since their founding in 2011, the LA-based R&B collective have released a string of brilliant full-lengths, with their last being 2015’s Grammy-nominated Ego Deaths. Breaking away for solo debuts  and collaborations afterwards, Syd released the LP Fin last year via Columbia, and she’s reportedly been bunkering down in the studio with Kelly Rowland, while Steve Lacey has been jamming with Solange. Solos and collaborations aside, the collective are now gearing for their comeback, having released the singles Roll (Burbank Funk) and Come Over. Their fourth studio album, Hive Mind, is due to arrive on 20 July.

On the title, Martians said, “If you google what ‘hive mind’ means, it’s basically a collective ego, a collective mind. You know, when people are together they have a collective mindset. And I think when we’re together we all have a common goal, and we move in the same direction.”

Hot off their album announcement, the group come together for an exclusive playlist, showcasing the sounds they’ve currently got on rotation. With their eagerly awaited LP on the way, below is some insight into what’s been soundtracking their direction as a collective. Starting with some 90s hip-hop from Grand Puba, the contemplative playlist features Mark Ronson and a soothing cut from Mac DeMarco – perfect for mild afternoons spent indoors. Hit the play button below, and take a peek into what’s been inspiring the group’s hive mind.

The Internet will play at Parklife, Manchester, 9-10 June
