SUNN O))) Announce Kannon

Drone behemoths Sunn O))) are back with their first album in six years

Sunn O))) have spent a lot of time collaborating over the last few years with little time left for founding members Stephen O Malley and Greg Anderson to record an album as a duo. Finally, the wait is over and the band will release Kannon, their first album proper in six years.

When last we heard from them they were joined by Scott Walker for 2014’s excellent record Soused. The album will apparently lean more towards metal than anything they have released before. The band have cited influence from albums like Darkthrone’s Panzerfaust and Bathory’s Twilight of the Gods. Collaborations have also been promised from Mayhem’s Attila Csihar, Australian multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi, Jessamine guitarist Rex Ritter and Zombi bassist Steve Moore.

The album’s title Kannon is a reference to an aspect of Buddha specifically the goddess of mercy and the band have commissioned critical theorist Aliza Shvartz to expand on theories surrounding the perceived notions of mercy and sympathy in Asian spiritual beliefs.

Kannon will be available via Southern Lord on gatefold LP, CD and digital formats from 4 December. There will also be limited number of clear vinyl available on Black Friday RSD 27 November.
