Fire destroys Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s ‘secret laboratory’

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s ‘secret laboratory’ contained his signature stage outfits and studio equipment

In a post on his Facebook page this morning legendary dub producer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry has revealed that his ‘secret laboratory’ containing all of his iconic stage costumes and studio equipment has burned down.

“Something very very sad happened. I forgot to [put] out a candle and my whole secret laboratory burned out,” he wrote on Facebook, “My whole life collections, arts, my magic hats, my magic boots, all my crazy show outfits and costumes: king, pope, general, magician… All my electronics and studio equipment and my magic mic, books, musik, CDs… Everything gone!!!!”

Perry has also called on creatively minded fans to donate costumes and props for his upcoming shows in exchange for guest list spaces saying “To my angels that always give me perfect things. If you have made something for me to bring it to the show when I’m in your area, it would be super if you send that to me in advance by post so I can have it before I start with show in March, because now I’m going to Jamaika and will not have the time to look or make special special outfits.” He added on the end, “I will put + ? on the guestlist when I come to your area and with backstage access so I can thank you personally.”

The incident is not Perry’s first run-in with fire. Back in 1979, following a spat of erratic behaviour, Perry burned down his own Black Ark Studios and later described the experience as ‘cleansing’.
