Berghain wins case to classify the club as a cultural institution

Berlin’s most famous club was awarded the status of a place of culture relevance in a Berlin-Brandenburg fiscal court hearing

Iconic Berlin nightclub Berghain has won a historic case that will allow the club to pay a lower tax fee as a cultural institution as opposed to an entertainment institution. German magazine Der Spiegel have reported that the club is now eligible to pay the lower rate of 12% tax enjoyed by classical music venues. Had they lost the case they would have been subject to paying a rate of around 19%.

A Berlin-Brandenburg fiscal court made the ruling official yesterday after Tax officials previously claimed that Berghain was “ruled by entertainment, not by culture.”

The news may come as a surprise to UK clubbers who are currently facing a stream of club closures from the iconic London venue fabric which closed last week to the less well known but hugely relevant Canvan’s which is currently under threat from developers.
