Amy Winehouse documentary breaks UK box office record

The new Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, had a hugely successful opening weekend.

Asif Kapadia, director of the award winning documentary Senna, has set a new record for UK box office sales with his latest film, a documentary about Amy Winehouse.

The film apparently earned £519,000 in its opening weekend in the UK alone which makes it the fastest selling British documentary in UK cinemas of all time.

“We are thrilled that audiences have come out en masse during a period of exceptionally fine weather to see Amy.” Said Hamish Mosely a spokesman for the film’s distributors Altitude, “It is testament to not only an incredible film, from some of the UK’s leading filmmakers, but also to the unique talent and enormous lasting appeal of Amy Winehouse, we are delighted that audiences have chosen to celebrate the life of the truly talented musical icon.”

The film opened to a 133 cinemas in the UK and is set to play in 200 more from next weekend.
