Brits 2017: David Bowie wins Best British Male Solo Artist

The award for Best British Male Solo Artist at the 2017 Brit Awards has gone to David Bowie

Following last year’s #britssowhite controversy, much has been made of this year’s edition of the annual industry blowout. With the likes of Anohni, Solange, Skepta and Stormzy up for awards throughout the night, it appears the Brits have gone some way to address their diversity problem. Indeed, the Best British Male Solo Artist category also counted Skepta and Kano among the nominees. However, on the night it was David Bowie who scooped the gong.

Accepting the award on behalf of the late icon was actor and star of Lazarus Michael C. Hall. “If David Bowie could be here tonight he probably wouldn’t be here tonight,” he quipped before taking a serious track: “I’m here tonight on behalf of his family to accept this testament to a man who beholden to nothing but his own boundless imagination and daring. Whose ever expanding artistic vitality simulteneously soothes us and sears us and astonishes us. Maybe he is here tonight, I don’t know.”
