Flying Lotus scores animated film Blade Runner 2022

Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the short film is a prequel to Blade Runner 2049

Former Crack cover star Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, has created the soundtrack to a short animated film entitled Blade Runner Black Out 2022. The score also features music from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Kuedo. Set in the year 2022, the short film takes place between the first Blade Runner film – set in 2019 – and the forthcoming sequel Blade Runner 2049. The new prequel is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who’s best known for his animated series Cowboy Bebop.

Ellison said via his Twitter, “Doing something with Watanabe was a dream of mine. Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest!”

A fan of the first film, Ellison shared on Twitter how he watched Blade Runner “every night earlier in the year” and got contacted, on a “rare rainy day n la” to create the soundtrack.

“First things I thought was how cool it would be to get kuedo and @MiguelAtwdFrgsn involved too. It all came out so good. Really proud of it.”

He added, “When I saw a rough cut of 2022 the temp music was from my past albums. Seeing Blade Runner imagery set to my music was a beautiful feeling”.
