Akon is bringing electricity to 600 million people in Africa

Akon has made a huge step forward in sustainable energy for people in African countries.

The singer is best known for hits such as Smack ThatLocked Up and Lonely but he has announced the launched of an initiative called Akon Lighting Africa which aims to bring solar power to over 600 million Africans.

The initiative will be centred around a Solar Academy in Mali where young engineers and entrepreneurs will be trained up in how to provide and organise solar power within communities.

Co-founder of Akon Lighting Africa, Samba Baithily said in a statement from the firm, “We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise”.
