Metal fans are the happiest music fans

We always knew metal was the only thing keeping us sane.

It’s official, metal is good for your health. According to an article called Three Decades Later: The Life Experiences and Mid-Life Functioning of 1980s Heavy Metal Groupies, Musicians and Fans which was published in the journal Self and Identity people who listened to metal in the 80s are significantly more well adjusted than those who didn’t.

The study claims that “metal enthusiasts did often experience traumatic and risky ‘sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll’ lives” but that “the metalhead identity also served as a protective factor against negative outcomes.”

The survey included 377 adults of which 154 were metal fans, musicians or groupies in the 1980s, 80 who had been into other music at the time, and 153 university students from California.

Apparently, those involved in the metal community “reported higher levels of youthful happiness” and “they were also less likely to have any regrets about things they had done in their youth.”

It’s only a matter of time until our doctors are sending us off to Download and Sonisphere in search of happiness. In the meantime why not revisit our recent list of reasons to love Pantera’s Phil Anselmo.
