The Offspring sell their back catalogue for $35m

The pop-punk legends have sold off their hit-filled catalogue to creative music company Round Hill Music

The Offspring, the dudes behind such classic pop punk albums as Smash, Ixnay on the Hombre, and Americana, have decided to cash in their decades-old back catalogue. We’re guessing they’re pretty pleased with the $35m they got for it – that’s almost $9m each.

The sell-off means that the NYC-based music company Round Hill will be paid for any use of the band’s music commercially. Advertisements, TV shows and video game soundtracks are included under that umbrella, and the band’s music has already appeared in several commercial ventures: their tunes have featured in Batman Forever, Crazy Taxi, King of the Hill, and Rock Band amongst many others.

“We felt that having the right caretaker for our catalogue, both the masters and the publishing, is incredibly important to the future of our career,” vocalist and guitarist Dexter Holland said in a statement. “Round Hill understands that we are continuing to perform and record and that the visibility of our past is critical to our future.”

Round Hill chairman and CEO Josh Gruss also seemed happy with the sale despite the high price tag. “We have some masters like the Bush catalog and records from developing artists like London Souls and Nigel Hall, but we wanted more exposure and you won’t get a more high-quality catalog than The Offspring.”

Though the band have relinquished responsibility of their older works, they show no sign of slowing their output. Co-lead guitarist Noodles revealed the band will be releasing an album this year in an interview on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean.
