In the first episode of their new series, Tribes, Smirnoff Sound Collective delve deep into the history and influence of Discwoman – a techno-focused all-female DJ collective that’s taking on the male-dominated landscape of electronic music.
The mini-doc tracks Discwoman’s liberating impact from NYC’s Bushwick, to Mumbai, to an explosive event in Mexico City, following the founding members of the team: big-thinker Frankie Hutchinson, ascendant musical talent Emma Burgess-Olson (who produces as Umfang), and pragmatic party-organiser Christine Tran.
The Black Madonna, Star Eyes, Demian Licht, Sandunes, Nicole Moudaber and Ninasonik also weigh in on the importance of challenging the gender imbalance.
