Could drones end bad festival phone reception?

US telecommunications company AT&T think they may have found a solution to the terrible phone reception punters suffer at festivals

Drones are bad right? Wrong! They could spell the end of those long solo missions to the stone circle at 8AM desperately trying to find your mates who made off with the last of your cider. Well maybe.

American phone company AT&T believe they may be able to use drones to boost phone signal at busy events such as festivals. The technology which they call Flying COWs (Flying Cell on Wings) will hover above crowds giving off temporary cell phone signal boosts.

Imagine you’re at a concert watching your favorite band, and out of the corner of your eye you notice a tethered drone hovering nearby,” says a spokesperson from AT&T. “But this drone isn’t taking photos or videos of the band. It’s temporarily providing enhanced LTE wireless coverage at the packed venue so you, along with thousands of others in attendance, can simultaneously send photos and videos to share the moment.”

AT&T currently say they have no plans to roll out the technology in the near future but it seems to be an area they’re investing some serious thought into as the company currently already uses drones to investigate issues with their cell towers.
