Seminal witch house group Salem set to return

Photographer and musician Wolfgang Tillmans says Salem’s Jack Donaghue and John Holland have remixed his song Make It Up As You Go Along

After a 5 year hiatus it looks like witch house pioneers Salem are back in the studio. The announcement came this morning via recent Crack interviewee Wolfgang Tillmans who wrote on Instagram that two of the group’s members – Jack Donaghue and John Holland – have been working on a new album in Louisiana. The remix (and potential album) will be the pair’s first work together since their 2011 EP I’m Still In The Night.

The band have not yet confirmed the news but Tillmans has said that their remix of Make It Up As You Go Along will be out on 16 September.

Read our feature with Tillmans here and listen to the original mix of Make It Up As You Go Along below along with Salem’s classic Trapdoor.

SALEM’s John Holland and Jack Donoghue just sent through 'Make It Up As You Go Along (SALEM Remix)’ The first piece of music they release in over five years. – They did the remix in Montegut, Louisiana this month, where they lived for the last year and where I took this photograph in May when visiting them. As expected the mix is super dense, highly abstracted from the original, and has an irresistible magic and pull. John and Jack were working on a new album there, and are completing it in Los Angeles, where they live now. Salem are back. Full Louisiana pictures when album comes out. Label tbc. – 'Make It Up As You Go Along (SALEM Remix)’ will be on Wolfgang Tillmans ‘Device Control EP’ together with more tracks and remixes tbc soon. Release date September 16. Fragile003 distributed through www.wordandsound.net The original mix is on Spotify, Traxsource, Beatport, iTunes, and others as well as 12” vinyl out now.
