Brit Awards promise more diversity in response to criticism

The Brit Awards’ chairman Ged Doherty has promised to change the voting system to ensure more women and POC are able to make nominations

After last year’s criticism of the Brit Awards lack of diversity chairman Ged Doherty has outlined his plans to shake up the awards ceremony’s outdated voting system. Doherty has said he will up membership of the voting committee by 700 members to adjust the gender ration from 70:30 male:female to 52:48 male:female and source 17% of the new membership from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

The stipulation also means that the lists of artists put forward for nominations has to be 50:50 male and female and must include a minimum of 15% BAME nominees.

In response to the news MOBO awards founder Kayla King has praised Doherty’s efforts saying, “I am delighted, congratulate and thank the BPI for responding to feedback and improving diversity on their Brit awards voting panel. This is a really positive move forward.”
