M.I.A. preps first US shows since travel ban

The artist is set to make her return to the States, with shows confirmed for Riot Fest and the Meadows

Last May, M.I.A. broke the news that she was unable to travel to the US due to travel restrictions which meant it was impossible for her to obtain a visa. She took to Twitter to suggest that her LP, AIM, was in danger of being shelved by her label because of her inability to tour or promote it.

However, In October last year she revealed that, after contacting human rights and immigration lawyers, her visa had finally been approved. This prompted speculation that she may tour America again. Earlier this year, in January, she tweeted from LA.

Today it was confirmed that she will be marking her live return to the US with appearances at Riot Fest and the Meadows. It’ll be her first set of shows in the US since 2014.

This isn’t the first time the British-born Sri Lankan artist has experienced complications with her visa in the US either. Back in 2006, the rapper allegedly found herself briefly on the US Homeland Security List due to the political nature of her debut album Arular. This led to her second studio album, Kala, being recorded around the world, including areas such as the UK, India, Japan, Jamaica and Trinidad.
