Music festivals to black out websites to campaign against sexual harassment

In support of the Safer Spaces campaign, over 25 organisers will be turning off their websites on Monday 8 May to raise awareness of sexual assault and violence at music festivals

The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) have launched their Safer Spaces campaign, with the aim to “restate zero tolerance to sexual assault” at UK music festivals. It’s been launched with guidance from Rape Crisis England & Wales, Girls Against, Safe Gigs For Women and the White Ribbon Campaign.

60 UK festivals involved with the campaign will be signing new declarations to train staff and volunteers on issues relating to sexual violence.

Furthermore, over 25 of the music festivals involved will be participating in a website blackout for 24 hours from 9am, on Monday. They’ll be campaigning for AIF’s three key messages: ‘Zero Tolerance to Sexual Assault’, ‘Hands Off Unless Consent’ and ‘Don’t Be a Bystander’. Festivals taking part include Field Day, End Of The Road, 2000 Trees, Boomtown Fair, Bestival, Secret Garden Party and more. They’ll also be sharing the GIF below on their social media pages.

AIF’s campaign manager Renae Brown said, “It’s raising awareness and letting audiences know that if something were to happen, they can report it on site. This is something we should be talking about at festivals. We want people to look out for each other.”

On the campaign, Adds Rape Crisis’ Rebecca Hitchen said, “It’s really positive to see event organisers commit to training and strategies aimed at preventing sexual assault and rape at festivals, as well as making sure those who do experience these crimes get access to appropriate support. Zero tolerance to sexual violence and encouraging festivalgoers not to be bystanders when they witness assaults are strong and crucial messages.”
