Village Underground win approval to reopen Hackney Arts Centre

A dilapidated arts theatre, that had been closed for 30 years, will be restored to become a multipurpose arts and music venue

Earlier this year, the team behind East London’s Village Underground put forward a proposal for public consultation. They proposed to reopen a rusted art deco theatre on Stoke Newington Road, and turn it into a multipurpose venue for art, music, theatre, lectures, talks and more. According to Resident Advisor, the team received approval from the council’s licensing committee on 20 July.

Having asked the public to send letters of support to Hackney Council, 428 letters of support were received along with 12 letters objecting to the plan.

Village Underground founder Auro Foxcrof told RA: “We’re hugely excited for this and for the future of the project as we now have the opportunity to build a world class cultural venue for Hackney and London.”

“It’s a testimony to Hackney Council that they support major arts projects in this way, that they believe in their local cultural organisations and ultimately, that they act on the belief that culture and art are fundamental to us all, as individuals and society as a whole. We’ve already set to work, we’re creating something new and beautiful for the cultural life of the city, something that we hope will be treasured for years to come.”
