R Kelly deletes questionable tweet amidst abusive cult allegations

The tweet comes after four former cult members have spoken out

Yesterday (12 September), R Kelly posted an ill-advised tweet promoting his new material. The caption read: “All it takes is one ‘yes’ to change your life. #WaitOnIt”. He also hashtagged it with “#MorningsWithKellz”. The accompanying image was the word ‘YES’ contrasted white against the repeated word ‘NO’ in pink. The tweet has since been deleted.

Twitter users have highlighted how problematic the tweet appears to be. The tweet comes after allegations have emerged of R Kelly holding women in a cult involving emotional and sexual manipulation. According to Buzzfeedwomen are ordered to follow Kelly’s rules, and non-compliance is punished with physical and verbal abuse. Kelly allegedly controls what the women wear, eat, when they sleep, bathe, and how they engage in recorded sexual acts. Phones have been taken away, and permission must be gained for the women to leave their locations. Four former members of the cult have come forward.

“I got trapped,” a former insider, named Kitti Jones, said. “I had people telling me I was an idiot. But it took me a long time to realise they were right, and I’m talking now because I hope I can help some of these other girls.”

Former member Jerhonda Pace, in breaking a non-disclosure agreement, said, “I didn’t have anybody to speak up on my behalf when I was going through what I was going through with him. He’s brainwashed them really bad, and it kind of reminds me of Charles Manson.”
