Mike Skinner reveals he has a film in the works

In a new interview with Mr Porter, Mike Skinner reveals that he’s got a film in the works.

“The reason I finished The Streets was to make a film, and the reason I started The Streets up again was to make a film,” he says. His upcoming European tour hasn’t contributed to the funding of the film, though the announcement did “make people pay attention enough that we could have more exciting meetings with people.”

The article states that Skinner has been attempting to get a film project in motion for a while, and that he once entertained the idea of a creating a hospital thriller. The film, entitled The Darker The Shadow, The Brighter The Light, is about “a farce about guys and girls getting into trouble” in a club. Set in London, Skinner likens the project to Dawson’s Creek and describes it as “a Streets musical”.

“I like [my characters] to say the things that they thought of when they’re walking home from a terrible argument, and thinking, ‘Oh, I should’ve said that.’ Not political correctness, just cleverness. Because stories aren’t reality, they’re an exercise for the mind.”

New music from The Streets will soundtrack the film he’s working on, and Skinner admits he has enough new material – around 40 songs – to make another album. During the interview, he confesses he’s not sure where his music should be placed: “I’m at a point where I have completely given up on what I think the market is.”
