Alison Garner is bringing widescreen theatre to ethereal composition

Alison Garner is a composer, singer and artist whose dreamlike vocals are now finding a platform in film and television.

Having briefly found success at the end of the 2000s as part of Bristol band The Fauns, signed to Geoff Barrow’s Invada imprint, Garner is now carving out a path for herself as a soloist.

Maintaining the same ethereal, post-trip-hop atmosphere that exists in the lineage of Portishead, Garner’s vocals were then used by fellow Bristol experimentalist Hyetal on his critically acclaimed LP Broadcast. Garner then performed live with Hyetal in a session for Boiler Room.

Throughout, it’s her ghostly vocals which have kept her placed at the vanguard of contemporary music and art. As an artist expertly equipped to create atmospheres and moods that tell vivid stories, it seems only fitting that her voice has ended up playing a role in cinema and TV.

One Strange Rock – a 10-part cinematic event series explores the fragility and wonder of planet Earth directed by Black Swan and Mother! auteur Darren Aronofsky featured haunting vocal layers from Garner which perfectly captured the wonder and dread of Aronofsky’s narrative.

Looking ahead, her voice will be heard on the always-stirring soundtrack of the BBC’s new flagship David Attenbrough series. Still searching for collaborations and finding new shades and shapes within her vocals, Garner will continue to build unique spaces and tell stories with her voice.
