The theme of fashion’s biggest night yesterday (7 May) was camp, and actress Lena Waithe made a bold statement with her look.
Taking to the red (well, pink) carpet dressed in an an icy blue Pyer Moss two-piece, Waithe’s look bore the reminder that ‘Black drag queens invented camp’ on the back. But look a little closer and you’ll see that, in fact, Pyer Moss’ design for the Master of None co-writer featured lyrics instead of what appeared to be pinstripes on her suit.
LGBTQ+ anthem I’m Coming Out was included in the design, along with Sister Sledge’s We are Family, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive and more. Be sure to zoom in on the image above to take in the details.
Other winning looks from the annual ball included Billie Porter serving “Old Testament Realness” and Lady Gaga arriving in – not one – but four looks. See them below.
The Met Gala was staged at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The fundraiser is the biggest night on the fashion calendar, and is held to benefit the Costume Institute.
