Nyege Nyege festival is back in Uganda this year with over 300 artists.

Growing electronic music festival, Nyege Nyege returns this year, bringing over 300 acts to Jinja, Uganda. This year marks it’s fifth instalment and will see the likes of Nigeria-born Santi, Belgium’s rising DTM Funk, Discwoman’s Shyboi, Josey Rebelle, and Juan Atkins perform across the weekend. Sisso, Slikback, Duke & MCZO and DJ Marcelle have also been announced. The festival promises “happenings, situations and art installations featuring dancers, acrobats, graffiti artists, fortune tellers, musicians, inventors and rainmakers,” for an eclectic weekend of festivities.

Nyege Nyege is happening at Nile Discovery Beach in Jinja, Uganda, from 5-8 September, and will focus on showcasing artists with links to Asia and the African diaspora. Over 300 performers from over 30 different countries are expected to play across five stages. Many of the artists performing at the festival will also be taking place in a residency program beforehand, producing new music to showcase at the event, which will then be released on one of Nyege Nyege’s two labels: Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala.

Nyege Nyege was established to support the East African music community, originally offering residencies and access to studios before launching a record label as well as an artist management agency. The festival was born in 2014 as “a platform to showcase the artists’ new productions, developing both the local arts and culture industry,” with aims to “connect underground musicians from around the continent with one another.” Over the past five years, the event has grown, putting Uganda on the map as a festival destination as well as a new hub for electronic music.
