American artist and illustrator Pedro Bell has died.

Bell is best known as the creative mastermind behind numerous iconic Funkadelic and George Clinton album covers, including 1973’s Cosmic Slop, 1974’s Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, and Clinton’s 1982 debut solo release, Computer Games.

The illustrator’s name also became prolific as a result of his artwork for Funkadelic’s 13th studio album, The Electric Spanking of War Babies. Bell’s illustration was deemed inappropriate by the band’s record label Warner Brothers Music due to its depictions of nudity.

News of the artist’s death was shared by Funkadelic front-man George Clinton and band member Bootsy Collins. Collins tweeted, “We lost the Master Mind behind the Graphic’s & Artwork of Funkadelic. Mr. Pedro Bell is an American artist and illustrator best known for his elaborate cover designs and other artwork for numerous Funkadelic and George Clinton solo albums. Thxs for yr service our brother (sic)”.
