The first trailer for Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story is here

The documentary will premiere at South by Southwest, before landing on Apple TV+ in April.

The first teaser trailer for Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story has landed. Just short of 40 seconds, the clip features archival footage from the group’s music videos. Watch it via the player above.

Directed by Spike Jonze and co-written with remaining band members Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) and Michael Diamond (Mike D), the Beastie Boys documentary was announced shortly after the release of their 2018 memoir Beastie Boys Book.

In a recent statement, Mike D and Ad-Rock said, “There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order. Spike is one of those friends. And even when you don’t recognise anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table. Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.”

Spike Jonze added, “I owe Beastie Boys a lot. One time, they pulled me out of a burning ship, and another time they helped me cheat on my college exam to get into Florida State. So, it was a real privilege to get to reunite with them and help them tell their story.”

The film will chronicle the history of the seminal rap-rock band, and feature segments shot by Jonze of Adam and Mike discussing the book. Jonze will also release a photo book, entitled Beastie Boys, on 17 March.

After airing at South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas on 13 March, select IMAX theatres will show Beastie Boys Story on 3 April ahead of its global launch on Apple TV+ on 24 April. Apple TV has described the film as “an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in a live documentary experience.”
