The international festival has announced the shows for its upcoming programme.

Previously, 16 artists were announced for Monheim Triennale’s inaugural chapter, with each act chosen for their “ability and courage to break new ground during their artistic process”. Each artist will reside in the city throughout the event to present new works and collaborations. Now, the event has revealed the details of its sprawling programme.

Former Crack Magazine cover star Shabaka Hutchings has been confirmed for two performances. The first will see the multi-instrumentalist perform the show Ensemble For Upliftment and Spiritual Unity with a chamber orchestra and his three bands: Shabaka and the Ancestors, Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming. Furthermore, Hutchings will head up a special joint show with Canadian jazz pianist and composer Kris Davis.

Berlin experimentalist Pan Daijing will helm a site-specific composition, and attendees will also be able to enjoy a world premiere from synth aficionados Lehn and Schmickler, who will perform alongside New York-based artist Chris Corsano.

Terre Thaemlitz has also been announced for two shows. The artist will perform a set under her DJ Sprinkles alias, and an ambient show under her real name. Festival-goers can expect to hear a late-night set from Efdemin (otherwise known as Phillip Sollmann) during the event. Sollmann will also open the festival’s second evening with Gegen die Zeit II, a collaborative show with John Gürtler.

As for the programme’s visual leanings, vocalist Julia Úlehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian will create live music to soundtrack two films by music ethnologist Vladimír Úlehla. An unpredictable live show, titled Unnatural Ways, will see Brooklyn-based artist Ava Mendoza push the limits of noise rock, free jazz and metal with Tim Dahl and Sam Ospovat.

In addition to this, Monheim Triennale has unveiled a string of tributes. Lakecia Benjamin will perform Pursuance: The Coltranes, a tribute to John and Alice Coltrane. Greg Fox is set to honour his metal roots with the Black Sabbath Cover Band Rehearsal.

The programme announced so far will be held in Kulturraffinerie 714 and MS RheinGalaxie on 1-5 July. Head to the event’s website for further information, and read our feature with Pan Daijing.
