Wolfgang Tillmans has released his first track since 2018’s Source with a music video which is premiering exclusively on Crack Magazine.
Growing was originally part of Tillmans’ South Tank installation at Tate Modern in 2017. The track is a collaboration with LA experimental duo Wreck and Reference who placed samples of Tillmans’ singing and spoken word over the instrumental. The track will form part of an upcoming double-A-side 12-inch release.
Growing also features parts of lyrics written by German record producer Fred Weyrich for singer Alexandra’s 1968 hit Sehnsucht.
Tillmans told us over email that the video was made by capturing “grooves in the master cut of a record through a microscope filmed at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.” The video was filmed and directed by Tillmans and edited by Michael Amstad. Stills from the microscope also appear on the track’s artwork.
