Black Midi are back with a new album. Titled Cavalcade, the forthcoming project follows the London band’s debut LP Schlagenheim, which was released in 2019.

The band unveiled the new project, which is scheduled for release in May via Rough Trade, by dropping its lead single John L alongside an accompanying music video. The new visual was directed by choreographer and creative director Nina McNeely, who’s previously worked on projects like Gaspar Noé’s Climax and Rihanna’s Sledgehammer music video.

According to the group, Cavalcade was produced by “John “Spud” Murphy and ourselves except for the first track John L which was produced by Marta Salogni”, with much of the “groundwork” for the project laid in the period following Schlagenheims release. Speaking on the album’s direction in a new statement, Black Midi’s Geordie Greep offers: “The emphasis when we were making and sequencing Cavalcade was to make music that was as dramatic and as exciting as possible.” Album artwork comes from designer David Rudnick.

As Black Midi told fans back in January, guitarist and founding member Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin is taking time off from the band to focus on his mental health. He is not featured on Cavalcade. The group enlisted two new members to play on the project: saxophonist Kaidi Akinnibi and keyboardist Seth Evans.

Cavalcade is out on 28 May via Rough Trade. Pre-order it here and watch the new video for single John L in the player above.
