Flying Lotus has released two new tracks.
Lifted from his soundtrack for the Netflix anime series Yasuke, the artist has today (20 April) shared the Thundercat collaboration Black Gold, and Between Memories featuring Niki Randa. He’s also released the instrumental versions.
Yasuke is a six-part anime series created by LeSean Thomas. Voiced by LaKeith Stanfield, it follows the story of a samurai warrior of African descent in an alternate version of feudal Japan. Yasuke is described as an outsider.
“Travelling as a Black musician in Europe, I feel like an outsider all of the time,” FlyLo said. “Even doing this project, it felt like we were Yasuke because we had to go to Japan and ask MAPPA Studios if they would be willing to make this Black anime show that is talking about their culture and all of this stuff.”
