Dark City Beneath the Beat was directed by TT the Artist.

Dark City Beneath the Beat is a new documentary celebrating Baltimore club music, artists and culture. The hour-long documentary homes in on the city of Baltimore and its globally admired home-ground sound, while also examining the city’s social and economic struggles. A fusion of dance sequences, archival footage and interviews with local key players form the basis of the film, which also pays tribute to late Baltimore artists such as K. Swift.

The musical documentary was directed and executive produced by rapper and visual artist TT the Artist. It marks her debut foray into feature film direction. The film, which first premiered at last year’s online edition of SXSW, is out now on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

Dark City Beneath the Beat was produced by Insecure‘s Issa Rae and Deniese Davis. Music supervision came from Baltimore club pioneer Mighty Mark. Rose DiFerdinando was also on board as an executive producer. To accompany the film’s Netflix premiere, TT the Artist has released an accompanying soundtrack album via Rae’s record label Raedio. The 18-track soundtrack features tracks from UNIIQU3, Kariz Marcel, Eze Jackson, DJ AngelBaby, Michael J.R. and more, alongside music from TT the Artist and Mighty Mark.
