The piece formed part of Unsound Festival’s 2020 online addition and featured performers such as Laaraji, Juliana Huxtable and Księżyc.
Nicolas Jaar is releasing an album version of his 2020 performance-based project, Weavings. Announced today (16 February), the record will be shared on 25 February via Unsound Festival – who commissioned and co-curated the project – and Jaar’s own imprint, Other People.
The project saw 12 instrumentalists from around the world performing via Zoom as part of the festival’s digital programming. According to Unsound: “The idea was to create a durational improvisation structured in the manner of a long fabric of sound.”
The work was recorded in one sitting in September 2020. The likes of Laaraji, Juliana Huxtable, Księżyc and Ellen Fullman – along with Jaar himself – performed during the session, which was mixed into a singular piece and streamed live from Jaar’s computer as the first performance of the festival. The forthcoming album contains the aforementioned mix spliced into nine tracks.
Jaar made an appearance at last autumn’s Unsound, where he transformed the project into a live show. This reimagination will be released later this year as a companion to the Weavings LP.
