The new service is aimed at creating a fairer music ecosystem.
Created by DJ and producer DVS1 – aka Zak Khutoretsky – Aslice asks DJs to upload their setlist to the software and share five percent or more of their gig fee. This share will then be distributed to producers on the playlist. Revenue from unidentified tracks will be donated to charities chosen by Aslice users.
The service hopes to bridge the pay gap between DJs and producers whose tracks get played out. “Since the year 2000, music sales and producers’ revenues have fallen rapidly while DJ fees have skyrocketed,” the Aslice website explains. This, along with the impact of pandemic and the continued decline of music sales, has added to the fee disparity. In 2019 the top ten DJs alone accounted for $273 million of the combined $1.1 billion DJ earnings that year.
In response to the situation, Berghain resident DVS1 has created Aslice along with former Global Head of Red Bull Radio Ethan Holben. Users can register to use the service as a DJ, producer or a fan, with the option to combine these profiles once signed up.
