The former Odd Future frontman spoke about the album in his second interview for the Converse All Stars series.
At the Q&A in Paris, Tyler, the Creator praised Kendrick Lamar‘s latest album when talking about honesty and emotional vulnerability. “I think honesty is awesome, with yourself, with [other] people,” he said. “And I think when you’re making something, it doesn’t have to be so obvious. But just being honest with how you’re approaching shit is when the best shit comes.”
“That’s what Kendrick just did with his new album,” Tyler continued, speaking about Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. “I love that album. I feel like he touches on shit that’s so open and honest that some people can’t listen to it because they probably feel he’s looking at them in their eyes and they’re like, ‘Oh, I can’t panic. Uhhh, I can’t listen to this. Put on something else so I can hit my dougie.’ And keep forgetting and numbing the shit that he’s talking about.” [sic]
“Not saying the people that’s doing that went through what he’s saying,” he added, “but it’s making them think about the shit that they’re covering up with that fucking, ‘I’m hard, I shoot people’ shit. I see it, I see through it.”
A clip from Something in the Water, Pharrell’s festival held in Washington D.C. last weekend, also showed Tyler going off in the front row during the N.E.R.D. rapper’s set when he played Mr. Morale – one of the tracks that Pharrell produced on Lamar’s album.

Kendrick Lamar released Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers on 13 May. His first album since 2017’s DAMN, the record features production credits from Pharrell, Duval Timothy and the Alchemist. It also includes guest contributions from Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Thundercat, Summer Walker, Ghostface Killah and more.
The Compton rapper headlines Glastonbury Festival this coming weekend, making his debut at the event on the Sunday.
