Kelela is teasing something

Kelela has been hinting at her comeback via a series of amusing posts on social media.

The US artist and former Crack Magazine cover star, who released her debut album – and last solo release – Take Me Apart in 2017, shared a series of video montages comprised of fan tweets and memes lamenting the singer’s apparent “disappearance” following the release of Take Me Apart. “When the world needed her most… she vanished,” reads one such tweet.

Some of the posts also reference a social media hacking incident that took place on New Year’s Eve 2021. A hacker got into Kelela’s Twitter account and proceeded to advertise PS5s for sale. The singer confirmed she was working on new music – “but sorry no PS5s” – in a post shared following the incident.

Following the series of cryptic videos shared over the weekend, fan noticed that the artist had also updated her website with a Warp Records newsletter subscription link. “Enter email to find out where TF Kelela’s been,” reads the email address box.

A third teaser was posted to Kelela’s social media account earlier today (12 September). It features a slew of people offering their thoughts on where Kelela has been in recent years.

Kelela brokethrough in 2013 with the release of her Cut 4 Me mixtape for LA imprint Fade to Mind. Her first EP Hallucinogen landed in 2015. In October 2018, the artist released a Take Me Apart remix project featuring the likes of Hitmakerchinx, LSDXOXO, Gaika and Kaytranada.

“It’s not just a bunch of remixes,” said Kelela at the time, “It’s how my worldwide community of producers and DJs communicate through difference. It’s also about the camaraderie that we experience when we find the overlaps. The same songs get to exist in these alternate realities which means different people get to have a relationship with the music. Maybe even with each other.”

In 2020, Kelela appeared on London DJ and producer FAUZIA’s are you hoping for a miracle? EP, lending her voice to track When It’s All Over.
