Ryuichi Sakamoto shares soundtrack for new sci-fi horror Anime, Exception

The Japanese composer has shared two tracks written for the new Netflix series, which comes to the streaming platform from 14 October.

Exception is a new Anime written by Hirotaka Adachi – aka Otsuichi – directed by Yuzo Sato and soundtracked by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The programme, which describes itself as a “terrifying space horror”, is set in the distant future where the human race has had to leave Earth for another galaxy.

Sakamoto’s score for the series will be released on the same day that the show premieres (14 October) via Milan Records. Speaking on creating the soundtrack, Sakamoto said, “I wanted to make the main theme a symphonic piece – the kind that has become a staple in science fiction since Star Wars.”

“As for the soundtrack as a whole,” he continued, “I worked towards keeping it darkly ambient, wanting it to feel like one piece of music rather than separated by scene. That said, I did include a degree of harsh sounds in the fighting scenes. Overall, I was able to make a soundtrack I like very much.”
