Doc’n Roll Film Festival returns to Manchester for 2022

The music documentary festival’s Manchester leg runs from 4-13 November.

Doc’n Roll Film Festival returns for its 2022 edition, platforming a series of documentaries that celebrate music subcultures. The festival, which is on tour across 13 UK cities, kicks off its Manchester event with a launch night on 4 November featuring a selection of music documentary shorts from local filmmakers and DJ sets from Barber Presents and Alphaville.

This year’s feature-length documentary screenings include Lee Fields: A Faithful Man and Heaven Stood Still: The Incarnations of Willy DeVille, the latter of which traces the wide-ranging legacy of the American singer. There’s also This is National Wake, a film debut from director Mirissa Neff that documents the South African punk band’s history with previously unseen footage of 1970s anti-racist counterculture.

Elsewhere, Doc’n Roll Film Festival is showing A Film About Studio Electrophonique, looking at the influential Sheffield-based studio where the likes of The Human League, Pulp and Heaven 17 recorded some of their earliest works. There’s also a documentary on South London 70s band Cymande. Both of these screenings include Q&As with the directors.
