Sky Ferreira also auditioned for the role.
In a new interview, Snail Mail‘s Lindsey Jordan revealed that she was asked to audition for the Madonna biopic – which was set to be directed by Madonna herself but has since been scrapped. Speaking to Inked Magazine, Jordan said that she was invited to try for the role the same week as she was asked to audition for forthcoming A24 film I Saw The TV Glow – which Jordan will star in alongside Phoebe Bridgers.
“I’m a huge Madonna fan”, Jordan said. Speaking on the audition process for the biopic she continued, “I had to come up with a dance routine based on one of her music videos—I had to look at what she was doing but not imitate it, but be inspired by it. She’s a dance legend. I watched a documentary. I was watching interviews with her. I was taking notes and I had to do three scenes. It was a good learning experience. I didn’t think I’d get the role, but if I didn’t work hard I’d feel bad for not giving it my all.”
Actor Julia Garner had been cast to play Madonna – with musicians Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha also auditioning for the role alongside the likes of Euphoria stars Sidney Sweeney and Alexa Demi. The feature was set to be directed by the popstar herself but is no longer going ahead, with Madonna opting for an international greatest hits tour instead.
Speaking about moving into film, Jordan said, “movies are up there for me with music. I think it’d be cool to write screenplays.” The Snail Mail musician will make her feature-film debut in Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw The TV Glow. “I did an actual role in that, which is crazy, and I went through the audition process,” she said of the forthcoming film role, “It’s just fun and exciting. I want to see what I can do.”
