The new funding scheme will support LGBTQIA+ grassroots music events organisers across the UK.

Big Dyke Energy is launching a new grant scheme. Save Queer Raves will provide financial support and mentorship to independent queer promoters putting on events in the UK. The scheme has been set up in light of the current landscape with the cost of living crisis and increased costs for running events contributing to it being ever harder to keep putting on events as DIY and independent organisers.

Applications for the Save Queer Raves grant will open in January 2024 and ten grassroots event crews will be selected and receive support for six months starting from February next year. Grants available will be up to £15,000 per music organisation and the programme will also include five mentorship sessions and access to discounted venue rates.

In August, the queer club night announced its closure at the end of this year – with the final BDE parties taking place on 9 December. “It has never been more important that queer, trans, non-binary and intersex people have spaces where they can be authentically themselves without the fear of prejudice,” Big Dyke Energy founders Melo and Elliott say, “and the closure of BDE means there will be one less space on the scene. We want to make sure that we leave a positive legacy by supporting new up-and-coming promoters the best we can”.

In order to fund the grant, BDE has launched a Crowdfunder page. “Our music scene thrives when it’s diverse and independent,” they write. “Speaking to other grassroots promoters across the industry, it’s clear that we’re at a dangerous tipping point.” Outlining the importance of this new Save Queer Raves programme, and the fundraiser to make it possible, the BDE crew adds: “after a lot of thought, we have decided to change BDE into a charity that will provide mentorship and grants to grassroots queer, trans+, non-binary and intersex music organisers over the next 6 months. And if it goes well, hopefully longer!” Head here to find out more and support the Crowdfunder.
