Late musician and pioneering recording engineer Steve Albini is having a street named after him in Chicago, Illinois.
The street that is the home of Albini’s legendary recording studio Electrical Audio – the 2600-2700 block of West Belmont Avenue – will now be called “Steve Albini Way”. It follows an ordinance declared by the office of Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa on 17 July.
Albini passed away earlier this year on 7 May, 2024 at the age of 61. He had a long and influential career in music, leading alt-rock bands Shellac and Big Black, while as an engineer recorded several important albums including with the likes of Joanna Newsom, PJ Harvey, Low, Mogwai and Nirvana.
He was born in Pasadena, California in 1962, but moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University, living in the city until he passed. Albini opened his iconic studio Electrical Audio in 1997, which he and his staff helped to lay the bricks for themselves.
