The set, which was recorded in Zürich, features in a new online archive compiling over 500 mixes from the late jungle and drum’n’bass pioneer.
A rare 1992 live recording of DJ Randall performing in Zürich, with an apparent cameo appearance on the microphone from Goldie, has resurfaced online.
The hour-long mix features in a recently compiled online archive, with over 500 of the late breakbeat, jungle and drum’n’bass legend’s mixes. According to a user who uploaded the mix to SoundCloud, the 4 July set at a Telepathy party is believed to have been DJ Randall’s first-ever abroad gig.
Throughout the set, microphone duties are shared between a few different people, with a voice sounding like Goldie’s appearing intermittently, while being shouted out by one of the other MCs at 13 minutes: “Oi Goldie, check out that bird in the pink, rough”. Taking control himself after eight minutes, he says to the crowd: “Whistles in the place/ Hands in the air/ DJ Randall on the 1s and 2s let’s go yeah/ Are you ready for the jungle?”
Randall and Goldie had a long running friendship, often hanging out and going to parties together in the early 90s. Speaking to DJ Mag, Andy C said: “You knew the second he and Goldie arrived in the club by hearing Goldie’s whistle. It’s like, ‘Right, Randall’s here and it’s going to go off.’”
The new archive follows the news that Randall had passed away on 31 July. Shared on Reddit by drum’n’bass archivist Ok-Wishbone-7354, there are mixes spanning two decades of parties including Accelerated Culture, Metalheadz and Helter Skelter, alongside radio sets from Rinse FM and Kiss 100 FM. It also includes several b2b sets, including with the likes of Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Andy C and Goldie.
“The main purpose of this archive is to try and host, and preserve as many Randall mixes as humanely possible,” reads a statement included with the files. “Randall was the GOAT, and his passing has been heavily felt by many. I wanted to preserve his legacy as much as possible in one place. I’m happy to cover hosting for an infinite time, and categorise and upload everything that comes my way.”
DJ Randall’s death led to an outpouring of tributes from the likes of DJ Rap, Fabio & Grooverider and many others within the drum’n’bass and jungle scenes.
