Crack Magazine and MUBI present Underscore: Music events inspired by film.
Underscore’s inaugural edition is a musical programme exploring the world of Andrea Arnold’s Bird – a tender and surprising coming-of-age fable, now streaming exclusively on MUBI.
Bird tells the story of Bailey (astounding debut from newcomer Nykiya Adams), a 12-year-old living with her father “Bug” (Barry Keoghan) in a squat on the outskirts of Kent, and co-stars Franz Rogowski.
To mark the film’s arrival on MUBI, we’ve curated a night of music inspired by BIRD at London’s ICA, with an exhibition featuring some never-before-seen on-set photography, by Robbie Ryan and Atsushi Nishijima, lovingly printed by our friends at Rapid Eye.
Carlos O’Connell of Fontaines D.C. will join us for an exclusive DJ set. As well as playing guitar in the biggest band of 2024, O’Connell also found time to star in Bird, acting as one of Bug’s crew and playing a pivotal role in perhaps the film’s most memorable musical moment (no spoilers here).
Carlos will be joined by Space Afrika, the Manchester duo whose touches of industrial field recordings and inner-city texture echo the character of the film.
With an original score by Burial, an iconic soundtrack featuring Fontaines D.C. and cinematography by the legendary Robbie Ryan, the film finds a stylised, storybook beauty within its social-realist depiction of working class Britain in the 20s.
To “underscore” means to emphasise. In cinema, the “underscore” is the ambient soundtrack which defines the mood of a scene. These aren’t screenings, they are events designed and curated to bring a film’s themes to life and connect in a different way.
Arrive early to claim a free drink and complimentary goodie bag.
