As he prepares to release his new album Cumbia Siglo XXI – a reinterpretation of Colombia’s cumbia traditions – Meridian Brothers, aka Eblis Álvarez, digs into the inspirations behind the record and some of his favourite tracks from the 1970s and 80s.
The selections for his mix all employee “a sort of tambor futurism,” Álvarez explains. “An overlay of traditional tambor patterns in some of its formats, superimposed with influences from funk, soul and disco as well as elements from highlife or Afrobeat.”
