Devonne Harris is something of a musical polymath.
Born in Virginia to music-obsessed parents (Harris’ father was a local radio DJ), his formative years were spent surrounded by records. It’s then that he first turned his attention to music-making, with Harris dabbling in everything from singing and songwriting through to production and live instruments. These days, he shares and releases music under his DJ Harrison moniker, or as part of jazz-funk band Butcher Brown. The group, who you may have spotted on Pink Siifu’s 2021 album Gumbo’!, bring their ideas to life at Harris’ house-turned-recording-studio, Jellowstone Studios.
Harris also recorded his latest solo record, Tales from the Old Dominion, at Jellowstone. Released in December via Stones Throw, the record is a funk-filled and psychedelic treasure trove of ideas, sounds and stories. Harris keeps things loose and lo-fi throughout, as he glides from covers of Jimi Hendrix and Roy Ayers tracks to essential collabs with the likes of Siifu and Stimulator Jones.
For his Sunday Mix, the artist takes us on a trip through the songs he listened to while recording the album. “The genres have an eclectic range,” says Harris, “pulling different elements from each tune to spark new creative ideas. For the full experience, enjoy with candles and nag champa incense.”
