female:pressure have shared their FACTS 2022 survey today (8 March).
The international network’s FACTS survey is an ongoing project which launched in 2013. This year is their fifth edition, and the survey offers an updated look at gender distribution across electronic music festival line-ups.
The report reveals that the proportion of women on line-ups has risen from 9.2 percent in 2012 to 26.9 percent in 2020-2021. For non-binary acts featured on festival bills, there has been an increase from 0.4 percent in 2017 to 1.3 percent in 2021. The research and findings also addresses issues such as racism, ableism and ageism within the industry, as well as taking into consideration billing hierarchy and gender disparity within leadership roles.
The survey looks at data collected from 159 editions of 109 different festivals from 2020 and 2021. Whilst the results show a continued gradual increase in women and non-binary acts over the last decade, gender imbalance prevails with cis-men still forming a significant proportion of line-ups. In response to this, FACTS 2022 includes a call-to-action section, which details practical suggestions to work towards greater gender equality across electronic music events.
