The Japanese composer has released an instrumental version of his collaborative 2001 single Zero Landmine.
Ryuichi Sakamoto formed the project No More Landmines with late journalist Tetsuya Chikushi and Japanese televison network TBS in the early 2000s. Featuring international musicians including Cindy Lauper, Kraftwerk, DJ Krush and more, the group focused on raising awareness about the many buried landmines across the world, and proceeds from their track Zero Landmine went towards de-mining efforts.
On Sunday last week (3 April), Sakamoto shared a new instrumental recording of the track. Entitled Zero Landmine 2022 and shared with the message ‘No War’, all proceeds from the release will go towards not-for-profit organisation Care.org to support their humanitarian aid in Ukraine. In January 2021, Ryuichi Sakamoto shared a statement revealing that he’d been diagnosed with rectal cancer.
