Kwes is no stranger to world-building. Since 2013’s ilp full-length and before, the London-based producer, artist and composer has crafted evocative stories through sound, arms outstretched to both grit and headiness, and the innately dreamy, all at once.
This year, Kwes was behind the the score for one of our favourite 2023 films – Raine Allen-Miller’s Crayola-hued rom-com, Rye Lane. When we spoke to Allen-Miller and Vivian Oparah (the film’s glorious co-star) at the time of its release, they spoke of a shared affinity for Kwes’ music and discussed his role in birthing the “south London sound” along with contemporaries such as Mica Levi and Tirzah. “I make playlists whenever I create anything and Kwes was 90 percent of the tracklist [when I was working on Rye Lane],” Allen-Miller said. “He just encompasses [the film] in so many ways.”
Following the November release of the soundtrack via longtime affiliates Warp, Kwes joins us for a free-flowing, fast-moving Crack Mix that connects the dots between scrapbook of styles he’s collected or enjoyed over the years. From aforementioned collaborators to the likes of Tierra Whack, Sugababes, PK Brako, L’Rain and brother Coby Sey, there’s a wooziness even amid its more haywire moments that locks you into place, transfixed. Hit play.
